As the excitement of re-opening the gallery hit me in April, I also got a bit carried away with finding new talent. Which meant in May we had 5 new artists join us!
One of these amazing new talents was Fiona Sales. Fiona’s work has this simplistic take with just the use of black and white paint but the emotion and character that her painting portray is captivating!
Here Fiona tells us a bit about herself and her working process:
‘I am 41 years old, married and a mother of three. I have lived in Newcastle all of my life. After the loss of our eldest daughter some years ago, I found painting a good form of therapy and it gave me something to focus on. Then the art took a back seat as motherhood took up the majority of my time. Now that my children are in their teens, I have been able to put a lot more focus back into my artwork.

I am self taught, so my style is likely unconventional, but it seems to work for me! I always try to show emotion in each painting and convey as much character as possible.
My portraits are done using black and white acrylic paints on A4 canvas textured paper and I paint using fine detailed brushes. A painting from beginning to end normally takes 3 – 4 days. I start by sketching the outline in pencil, it doesn’t have to be perfect as I often change small aspects whilst working. I then paint the black sections, followed by the white, before adding the final finer details.’
