Inspired by the stunning scenery of Northumberland and Catalonia, Newcastle-based artist Annie Kennerley works in oils, acrylics and mixed media on canvas and board. Having studied drawing and photography at college in Newcastle, Annie switched from pencil, charcoal and film to painting following a career in teaching. She creates her bold, energetic, semi-abstract, contemporary landscapes and seascapes, using multiple layers, expressive mark making and a range of implements and scraping back techniques. Annie paints in vivid, often moody colours, to create a sense of ephemerality and drama in her work; capturing changing skies, clouds and light of the spectacular seascapes of her native North East, and the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava, where she has a second home. Recently Annie has pushed herself away from semi-realism towards abstraction, enjoying the freedom and creativity this brings. Sometimes abstract for abstract’s sake but sometimes looking for an image within.
