There’s officially only 5 days left of winter! What a winter it’s been! Celebrating these 8 amazing North East Artists has certainly been a fantastic distraction from the cold dark days outside. With a sparkle of crystal and dash gold, we’ve loved taking a look down memory lane and seeing the beauty of our beloved north east through the interpretation and lens of our local artists.
Phil has spent the best part of a decade experimenting with natural light and perfecting the art of capturing the heartbeat of the north east. Often spending hours rooted to the same spot in all kinds of weather. Waiting for that ideal shot. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Phil would say that one picture can evoke a thousand emotions and tell a thousand stories!

Peter started drawing at school and never stopped; drawing has always been a hobby of his. But after being made redundant Peter made it his full-time profession. How lucky to have a hobby and a job rolled into one? Today, Peter almost exclusively paints in oil. The inspiration for his work comes from childhood memories of everyday life. Peter’s hope is that through his art work, he can help to keep alive those memories of a time now sadly gone.

David Holliday is best known for his twilight cityscapes, rugged landscapes and more illustrative images of wildlife. Using his preferred medium of watercolour, David has a distinct, bold style. With the use of intricate line work and fresh, rich colours, he manages to capture a jewel-like quality to his paintings. Before starting a new painting David visits the place or subject matter that interests him. While on location David takes his time to absorb the atmosphere of the place. Did it feel lonely, exciting, brooding or tranquil? Once the mood has been established, David paints several small studies hoping to find the right colour combination to reflect this.

Joe Hush paints landscapes of Northumberland, Scotland and The Lake District. He is a traditional artist who tries to portray something of himself and his love of the landscape into his paintings. Joe often goes walking in the countryside watching as the light transforms the landscape. Woodland interiors, mountain peaks and pastoral scenes, all are painted with a feeling from the heart. Joe is not a slave to the landscape, he takes from it what he wants as he paints. He allows his memories and feelings equal measure to the actual scene. To this day he still remains mesmerised as he sees the scene begin to materialise on the paper or canvas.

Although Michael has loved art since childhood and painted as a hobby, it wasn’t until 2011, when his children were older, that he started to take his painting more seriously. In less than a year, his work was being well received in local Art Galleries in the North East. His trademark became a touch of red, to be found in every painting. Michael’s earliest paintings are of landscapes, however he now focuses mainly on cityscapes, from Newcastle to New York. He also loves to paint scenes of the industrial past and nostalgia, evoking memories of days gone by. Michael is proud to be born and raised in the North East and this is clearly apparent throughout all of his work.

In 1996 Julia began her business in the world of ceramics. Her love of colour and texture began to be a key feature in her pots and remains so to this day. Julia also loves theatre and circus, this inspires and informs the whimsy in her work. Julia developed the use of crowns as lids and tops in 1998 and this feature has become a recognisable trademark of her work, as is the use of lashings of gold! Each piece is handmade and goes through four firings which means each piece is a labour of love and can take quite a while to complete.
